The cover of this book is very eye-catching and cheerful and hints at the story inside. Counting to a million does not sound so difficult but turns out not to be particularly easy.
Max, the child doing the counting, 'narrates' the book and it is intriguing to read the thoughts of an eight year old boy going through a pandemic. The writing style is quirky and entertaining as Max meanders and digresses, putting in asides such as his mum explaining about going off on tangents and he tells himself he must not do that.
His misunderstandings, for example, of expressions adults use or of what is going on again made me smile as you can see how strange and confusing they must seem.
He drives his mum mad insisting on counting everything at every opportunity but explains in his thoughts about how this helps him forget to worry about such things as not being able to have dad at home with them.
I think younger readers would also enjoy this book.
