This is a really sweet and heartwarming story following young Max as he sets himself a challenge to count to a million. The challenge gives Max something to focus on as the country goes into lockdown at the start of the pandemic and celebrates the community spirit and generosity of individuals which helped many families through a very difficult time.
Books set during the pandemic are likely to become increasingly prevalent and, especially for young children, these kinds of stories filled with hope and love are important for helping them make sense of what they have lived through and can help them talk about these issues in the context of stories. However, I can also appreciate that reading a book set during this time may feel too soon or too raw for some readers.
This is a book that has plenty to enjoy for both young readers and adults and is a wonderful story for parents and carers to share with their children.
