This is the story about Max, a fairly average, ordinary boy who loves performing, especially magic tricks. He has a likeable family (with an adorable dog) and a fantastic bunch of friends. Max's life is good apart from one thing - George Bottley, the school bully.

Without letting out any spoilers, let's just say that one day something truly magical happens to Max and his life is never going to be the same again!

I thought that the writing in this book was very engaging. The characters were all well drawn and believable. It was similar in style to a David Walliams book, humorous and exciting. The illustrations were delightful and added an extra element to the book. I particularly liked the "flip" pictures on the corners of every page, another little treat for a child to enjoy!

Max himself deals with some quite big themes in the book; bullying, self-understanding, extortion and gangland crime to name a few! I appreciated the comparison of Max's own bully to the gangsters who ran an extortion racket in the market where his dad worked.

I saw that this is the first in a series and I think it will be very popular. I can also see it as a fun television series.
