As an adult I enjoyed reading this book even though it's aimed at younger readers. With its large , clear print it's ideal for early readers to read for themselves or to have read to them. Max Mullers loves magic and spends all of his free time practising magic tricks, often with disastrous results. He has a big problem not only with the school bully but also with the Cray brothers who terrorise the neighbourhood. When he visits his grandmother and discovers a locked chest his fortunes change. He unlocks the chest and immediately feels as if he's been hit by a thunderbolt. He soon discovers he has real magic powers and at first uses them wrongly. His friends and grandmother encourage him to only use them for good. The end if the book hints at a sequel with the suggestion from his friends that they find out more about Albert Andrews and his old chest
