Stephen Mulhern has been a television's presenter for many years, as well as starting as a magician (as some people might not know) before he moved onto presenting the gameshow Catchphrase. This book is written with the author's knowledge of magic clearly coming to the fore in the tale of Max Muller, an average boy with an average family and friends. However, like many schoolboys he needs to deal with the school bully, the sinister Bottley the Bully!
When Max discovers a strange looking chest in his grandmother's antique shop and goes to investigate this is where the magic comes in, changing Max's life forever in this. Good writing, a great length for older kids and an exciting story that deals with real life issues of growing up as well as the 'other world' of magic. A great read to try and convince kids to give a novel a go, especially if they like cartoons like this.
