Probably for a younger audience

I didn't love this book, but then I'm probably significantly older than the target audience.
Max is a boy who loves magic, but is struggling with understanding how and when to use it. His dad runs a market stall, and Max enjoys helping out. At school he has a group of good friends, but is bullied by one particularly nasty boy.
When he opens a chest at his nans and gains a magic hat his powers increase, but he struggles with how to use them. Thanks to Reader's First for sending me a copy to read and review.
In some of the narrative I can hear Stephen Mulherns voice, and think this could work quite well as an audio book with him reading it.
I'd be interested to see what my children made of it, as they are more the target age group I suspect, but for me it was lacking both depth of plot, and something else which I couldn't put my finger on.
Not for me but sure it will do well
