I'll be honest, my heart sinks a little when I see a children's book being released by a celebrity so I didn't expect much from this tale, by Stephen Mulhern. However the well respected author Tom Easton has also had some input on this - it shows!
What we have is a really fun tale, which essentially boils down to facing up to bullies.
Max loves magic. His grandparents were magicians and he wants to carry on the family tradition (his Dad gave up magic and runs a toy stall in the market). These days his Gran runs a second hand shop and one day Max opens a mysterious chest. Inside is a top hat and man's suit - he tries on the hat and feels a swell of power run through his body. Before you know it his magic has taken on a life of it's own.
Max is a fun character and you get the feeling that there is a touch of the autobiographical about him and his family.
We loved the illustrations and the flick book effect in the corner of each page and the story finishes on a note that makes it clear there is more to come.
A fun and easy read that I'm sure will be a popular choice in my school's library!
