A lovely uplifting story that will encourage reluctant readers. It deals with the subject of bullying and gangsters in a humorous and satisfying way.
Max lives with his loving and quirky family in the East End of London. He has three good friends and together they defeat a school bully and twin adult crooks who are threatening with menaces the stall holders at the local market. Max, who has always been interested in magic tricks, acquires special powers from a chest in his gran’s junk shop and learns how to use the powers for good rather than evil purposes.
He also acquires the ability to communicate with his dog, Lucky, which is amusing even though it is predictably thoughts about food and the markings left by other dogs!
I feel that this book is autobiographical in parts as Stephen Mulhearn grew up in the East End and struggled to succeed at becoming a successful celebrity magician. It is a book which encourages youngsters that they can achieve against all odds.
