Fern is a horrible person. She's selfish, has no personality, and is the epitome of an 'I'm not like other girls' trope. She has been through a lot sand I get that, but the only thing holding the book together is the world building. The relationships were underdeveloped, there was an info dump and it was boring for the entire first half of the book, and everything was so predictable.
The world had so much potential, and the magic system and creatures had a possibility to be really amazing, but Fern ruined the entire book for me and I'm not sure how this is going to be a trilogy.
I did like the flashbacks to her mum, although her mother does seem to be just like Fern. Her father was a classic example of a character not needed, but put in because she had to. The description was ok, but in places way over the top.
I did love the cover, and thought it was really suitable for the book.
