THE MIDNIGHT TWINS is the beginning of the renowned author Jacquelyn Mitchard's latest teen trilogy, which has built a mysterious, suspenseful, multi-layered universe based on two incredible adolescents. By making a few clever flashbacks in the lives of the twins, she craftily builds up suspense, revealing a little at a time, and subtly fills out her characters.

In addition, the talented Mitchard has a special way of explaining the dream sequences and the recovery period after the fire in the hospital, particularly with words. As they venture into the unknowns getting visions of the future and the past, as they reach out to each other for warmth and protection, she draws the reader into the minds of Mally and Merry.

The book picks up and actually does quite a good job at keeping attention once the girls come into their forces! It's difficult to put down the book when all the good stuff starts happening, and I kept wondering as long as the girls were guessing who was the culprit of the burn, and who was trying so hard to freak out Mally. It remains slightly confusing with the titles, but I had just gotten totally used to it by the end of the novel.
