Stasha and Pearl are twins and this makes them special in the eyes of one man. A man whose "research" means that they are spared the horrors of the main interment camp but will, instead, face greater horrors as part of his Zoo.

Amongst all the books and tales told about the atrocities engineered within the walls of internment camps few have dealt with the special brand of sadism encountered by those unlucky enough to catch the eye of Josef Mengele. This is a very brave choice of subject matter by the author.

I am not entirely sure where I stand with this book. The writing style is not one which draws me in to the story; it leaves me feeling outside looking in on the action and the actors are upon their little stage rather than inhabiting the characters. As harrowing as a tale this appears to be I would still rather feel that connection rather than an almost academic passing interest in their plight.
