A wonderful debut novel. Twin sisters Pearl and Stasha are taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the horrors they are part of and witness at Mengele's Zoo are central to Mischling. Each chapter alternates from Pearl to Stasha and their POV. The relationship between the twins and the friendships they make give this story beauty and I hope. Beautifully written.
I've read a few books about The Holocaust and have read in passing about Mengele's Zoo, but I've never read such an intense and emotional novel such as this. My youngest sisters are identical twins and I couldn't help but imagine them in Stasha and Pearl's place. Reading this also reminded me that we still don't know enough about the horrors of Mengele's Zoo. Unless of course we actively research the subject.
