I really wanted to love this book - it started impressively and I was eager to read more. The characters were interesting and I confess that I absolutely love the time period and the setting - and one thing du Beke writes well is stories about dancing. It’s the world he inhabits and that is reflected in his writing about the subject.
However, post explosive opening I found the story began to lag and I wasn’t as invested in any of the characters enough to make me desperate to finish it. The book is well written in terms of language and the descriptions are atmospheric but overall I was left wanting more from the story. It was an okay book but I wouldn’t be in a rush to re read it anytime soon. I think lovers of Downton Abbey would enjoy this probably more than I did.
