I was recommended this book by my mum, while her and I don’t usually have the same tastes in books she wouldn’t stop talking about this one and so I caved. I’m so glad that I did. This story is so heartbreakingly beautiful and written flawlessly. Highly recommend.

This story is set in Nuneaton in the 1880’s and follows the life of Sunday, who was left on the workhouse steps as a newborn baby. During her time in the workhouse she experiences many hardships along the way. The staff working in the work house do completely unforgivable things to these poor children, making their lives hell and when the headmaster turns his attention to Sunday she makes a plan to leave. Now in the “real world” Sunday is faced with new challenges: earning a living, ensuring she never loses her friend Tommy and a desire to find her birth mother.

(Also for any late teens/ early 20 year olds reading this, this book brought me back to my childhood as it’s basically a grown up version of Hetty Feather haha)
