I'm not a fan of this genre of books and I had already read the sequel, The Little Angel, which I found a bit superficial.
So I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed Mothering Sunday so much. Although the story was predictable, it was on the whole well written (apart from the overuse of exclamation marks! - does Rosie Goodwin have no confidence in her words alone that she has to bring significant points to the reader's attention with an exclamation mark?)
My only other criticisms are about the cover:-
1) it shows a pretty young girl carrying a baby. If this is supposed to be the eponymous heroine, Sunday Small, she should have blond hair not brown.
If not Sunday, who is the girl suppose to be as she doesn't fit the description of anybody else in the story?
2) the texture of the dust jacket has a horrible tacky feel which made me want to keep washing my hands.
I will certainly try the third book in the series now, A Mother's Grace. I feel I might even become a fan by the time all seven have been published.
