Full of warmth, despite a degree of predictability
I've never read any novels by Erica James before but this book's cover and blurb gave me a fair idea of what to expect. Family, saga but overlaid with a blanket of cosy warmness.
That is exactly what I got. The story of a recently(ish) widowed Mum, who rediscovers a childhood sweetheart, and her two daughters was full of family trials and tribulations. If I'm being honest, it was a little predictable in places but that's not to detract from the storyline. It covered some pretty hard hitting subjects - domestic violence and coercive control - but without hammering home the points too explicitly.
The setting was on the West Sussex coast - literally less than 20 miles from my home - which gave it a wonderful sense of familiarity.
All in all, don't expect to be surprised but do expect to enjoy a heartwaring family story with a few turns along the way.
