The story grabs you from the offset: a thunderstorm causing a delayed flight.

Then a chance meeting of an old college acquaintance, Jeff, leads to the luxury of a first class lounge for the wait and a catch up on the life of someone he didn’t even know that well.

We start to learn of Jeff’s life since leaving college and about the pivotal event that has shaped his life since.

The telling feels very nostalgic, almost wistful of what could have been. It also sounds like a confessional. Why would Jeff start divulging his life story in this way to someone that he was barely acquainted with at college?

There’s more to learn about the author as well. We don’t know his name. We only know he hasn’t drunk in years and he’s on his way to see a publisher in Germany.

I’m very intrigued as to how this continues as there’s a mystery to unravel, about both Jeff and the author.
