A big disappointment

The beginning of this book had me excited for what seemed to be building up to a great story. However, I was very disappointed with the lacklustre tale. It just seemed to bumble along with nothing remarkable happening until the last ten pages, which pick up the pace and become what the beginning had promised.
The characters in some cases were quite solid, but in others, barely explained. The dialogue was realistic, even if rather dreary. Between the start and the end, the plot seems to have been barely planned out, and just stumbled along without giving any clue as to what the story was actually about.
I apologise to the author if I am just not getting the point of the book, but the dreariness killed any enthusiasm I had for the book after reading the first section. A better planned story with at least something exciting happening between the beginning and the end would, in my opinion, have been better.
