I didn’t know what to expect from this book. But I really enjoyed it.

It’s the story of author, who bumps into an old college classmate, Jeff, when they’re both delayed at an airport. Jeff tells him the story of how he once saved the life of a drowning man, and becomes entwined with his life, when he discovers the man he saved is a renowned art dealer, Francis Arsenault.

The book is less than 180 pages, and has very short chapters. It is a very quick and compelling read. Jeff is narrating his history, and as the book progresses feels increasingly unreliable. He continually expresses his old desire to be seen as good person, for his act of saving a man’s life, yet inserts himself into Francis’ life, both working and personal. The suspense builds well, as it leads to a brilliant and shocking ending. I loved the way it finished, as the narrator finds out more about Jeff and Francis, and why he has been told this story from someone who is essentially a stranger.

There’s something a bit sinister about this book, yet its hard to work out why to begin with. Its compelling, and can easily be read in one sitting. It might not be for everyone, but I really enjoyed it. It shows the obsession of one man, and how he justifies pushing through boundaries and moral lines.
