A fast paced read

This story begins when the unnamed narrator has a chance encounter with an old acquaintance, Jeff Cook, while waiting for a delayed flight at JFK. Jeff Cook invites the narrator to join him in the first class lounge. After a few drinks, he begins to describe how many years ago he saved a man’s life on the beach.

The story unfolds through the dialogue spoken between the two men where it quickly becomes clear that perhaps the narrator doesn’t wholly trust Jeff Cook’s account of the events following the beach rescuing, and perhaps neither should we.

The author’s use of dialogue and short chapters made this a quick read for me. It’s easy to allow yourself just one more chapter when that may be just a page or two. Despite this fast pace, I did find the story lacked action and twists that I would expect to see in this genre. While I enjoyed this read, I did hope for a little bit more drama and deception.
