This is one of my favourite reads of this year. A short and compelling novel .
The narrator is a struggling writer who has an accidental meeting at the airport with an old classmate , Jeff Cook . They were not good friends but they recognised each other and strike up conversation.
Their flight is delayed so Jeff invites the narrator to the first class lounge to await news of the flight. Jeff is clearly very affluent and once they are settled he starts to relate the story of an incident which occurred when he was fresh from school and which set him along the path of the rest of his life. He saved a man from drowning .
It is a captivating and compulsive read. From the beginning the writing gives undertones of unease with a feeling of dread and it keeps the pages turning.
Jeff Cook clearly thinks that at the time of the rescue he was a morally upright person, but was he really and did he stay that way? An interesting and enjoyable read.
