You know when you pick up a book, with a limited idea as to what it would really be like… well, that was me with this book. However, I was absolutely gripped. I didn’t put it down. In fact, I ignored everyone so I could finish it in the same afternoon.

I love the fact that the narrator isn’t the main character in the novella - Jeff Cook is. We hear the telling of a fateful day when he saved the life of a drowning man, Francis. Rather disappointingly, that man is nothing or no one to be proud of. Nevertheless, Francis takes a shine to Jeff. There’s no evidence he remembers who he is. But he is taken in by him and as a result takes him under his wing.

What these two characters explore is quite literally the meaning of life. What is real? What really matters?

I found this utterly compelling, completely unexpected and thrilling in so many ways. I absolutely loved it.
