Left me wondering

I really liked the overall shape of this story. It started with a narrative device used cleverly to keep the narrator and the reader both in the dark, and ended with a literary question mark which again left both narrator and reader wondering. This reminded me of Frankenstein which has to be one of my all time favourites.
However, I was a little disappointed by the middle of the book. It had enough pull for me to continue reading but not in the voracious kind of way I'd anticipated from the first look. The sense of foreboding was there but I felt there was a little too much focus on the art world in general and for me, not enough characterisation to make me empathise or have any strong feelings about the characters or their motives.
I would recommend this as an enjoyable but not too involved thriller which leaves you wondering, but don't think it has anything groundbreaking.
