Coming in at 180 pages this is a short but powerful novel with great writing that kept me riveted right up to the sucker punch ending. Waiting for a delayed flight our unnamed narrator bumps into an old college classmate, Jeff, and they while away the delay over drinks in the First Class Lounge. As they wait Jeff tells his life story to his old friend, starting with an incident in his youth when he saved a man from drowning. Jeff developed an obsession with the man and insinuated himself into his life but without revealing that he was his rescuer. As time passes and he learns more about the man Jeff starts to wonder if it would have been better if he'd let him drown. The novel has a confessional feel and at times feels slightly voyeuristic as we see events completely through Jeff's eyes, it's a brilliant character study and a compelling read.
