Wow so this book was both not what I was expecting and also a great fulfillment of what I could have wanted.
This short, almost novella if you will, story is told through an old acquaintance that the narrator meets in an airport lobby, there is not much input from the narrator however I do think this is essential for the following reason...
This whole book is one giant character study and one I cannot stop thinking about. The main character Jeff is so puzzling and the way he tells the story in such an unreliable ways really does inhance this. There are definite themes of power and the abuse of power, self-intitlement, obsession and above all else bargaining with yourself in the context of your own morality.
There are definitely some slower points in this book but honestly, they didn't bother me too much as I tended to use them to reflect more on what I had learned so far and how even the writing style itself leant itself to driving home the points that the author wanted to show.
It is clever and almost a contemporary thriller in some aspects but overall one I couldn't categorise. Honestly I don't know who I would recommend this too but I truly believe that this novelisation with its short snappy chapters was the perfect medium to tell it.
