This is a story set in the 1800's, involving the settlement of a family from New Zealand on a seemingly thriving but uninhabited island. Mr Peacock moves his wife and five children to the remote Island of Monday, expecting to be able to create a much better and independant life for his family. However it becomes apparent quite quickly that making ends meet on the island is going to be an incredibly difficult task. After two years of trying to make the best of their life on the island help finally arrives in the form of five Pacific Islanders. As the Islanders and settlers try to work together it becomes apparant that the island holds many mysteries and secrets that will change all of their lives.

The story is told alternatively from the first hand view point of the Pacific Islander Kalala and also from third person narrative of one of Mr Peacocks daughters, Lizzie. This helps to make the story much more interesting and allows you to see how completly different the way of thinking is between the settlers and the islanders. The story also visits both the past and the present from both view points, allowing the reader to learn about past events that have brought both the Peacocks and the Islanders to the island.

I wasn't very sure that Mr Peacock's Possessions was my kind of book however the first impression left me feeling intrigued and interested to read on. I am so glad i decided to read this book because i thought it was an amazing read and nothing like i have ever read before!
