Got better the more you read
This is the story of a family trying to make a life on a deserted island. It takes the family from running a hotel for seamen to taming nature and creating a plantation hopefully in Eden. After being cheated by the captain of the ship that took them there. They battle (Robinson Crusoe style) to eke a living off the volcanic island. Unfortunately on the day six native workers arrive the eldest son disappears.
The first chapters are not easy to read and I did wonder whether I would be able to complete the book. But the writing became more compelling. Although it is written through the thoughts of the young people it is an adult book but unfortunately the older characters were a bit thin.
I think I enjoyed some of it but I feel there was something missing.... but I don’t know what!
