I found this story a little bit of a mix! It was a slow burn at the start and I nearly gave up on it several time. I enjoy historical fiction and if it hadnt been for my want to learn more about the time, I probably wouldnt have finished it.
However, once I got to around half way the story really picked up. The disappearance of the brother and loss of a sibling and child runs strongly throughout and makes you want to know what happens.

As characters developed and you began to learn more about their past and where they came from.
At this stage, the storyline developed and the plot thickened. At this stage I began to really enjoy the story.
The flashbacks to the characters past also helped to develop an understanding to this traumatic and cruel historical time, one in which seems particularly relevant at the moment.
If you can preserve past the first few pages then this is a lovely story but stick with it!
