My Heart Goes Bang tells the story of a group of girls after moving into their university house for second year. We follow Ella, Issey, Liane, Lou and Paige and the issues they face during second year.

I loved this book so much! I have never read any YA set in university before and after reading this I feel like there should be so much more books set in university out there. I only managed one year at university, living at home before I discovered it wasn’t the thing for me. So, I feel like I got given a peek at the real university experience thanks to this book.

This book is centred around one of my favourite tropes, friendships. I love that this book focused around how much friendships matter especially whilst at university. This book is also all about women supporting women which is something I love reading about in books and feel needs to be in more books.

I loved how this book alternates between the five characters. Even though I was slightly confused at first with who was who. Alternating between character added to the story for me as I loved seeing where each girl was in each chapter. Unlike other books that alternate between characters in separate chapters. My Heart Goes Bang does it throughout each chapter. I must say Ella is my favourite character in this book, she is the most like me. Ella spends hours in bookshops and is so focused on doing well at university, that describes me perfectly. I loved all the other girls though and they each added their own bits to the story.

The themes explored in this book are things that I think every teenager should read about before going to university and in life in general. These themes include sexuality, drugs and money issue. Money issues is a big one when going to university and this book explores it perfectly. Also, sexuality is explored so well in this book.

I can’t recommend this book enough and I loved it so much. I said it before but I will say it again this book shows that friendship is one of the most wonderful things in life. I love friendships in books so much and this book has some of my favourite friendships ever. I want to read more about these girls.

Overall, I loved this book so much and cannot recommend it enough. It is perfect for people going to university or people already in university.
