This was a very short and easy to read book. Whilst I’m not usually a fan of thrillers, this didn’t read as such and I could take it more as a book about the complexities of trauma and how far humans will go to protect those we love. This story explores the limits of humanity, the detachment that repetition brings to very traumatic scenes or acts and the fact that upbringing has a definite and everlasting impact on children, even when they grow up.
While it doesn’t read as a thriller, the tension to whether the mask will fall is kept throughout the narrative and weaves with all the different feelings that the main character goes through.
We not only see two very different personalities at play but also two very different sets of values and morals, even for two people that had grown up together.
The short chapters and easy writing style make it a book that is extremely easy to devour and that keeps the reader engaged throughout.
