I found this book to be so compulsively readable that I devoured it in a single day. From the concept itself (How far would you go to protect a law-breaking sibling?) to the simple, striking language and the moral dilemmas of the characters, Braithwaite’s unique take on crime fiction was a breath of fresh air.

I found myself frustrated with various characters at times - life seemed far too unfair for the protagonist, Korede, with nobody seeming to notice her plight. But I came to see this as a strength of the POV. Korede’s self-pitying perspective was something most of us can relate to in some way. It helped me to realise how many self-centred decisions were made throughout the book, by characters ranging from family members to police officers, despite most of them claiming (and sometimes truly believing) that they were acting on the behalf of others.

If you are looking for a quick, twisty crime read with lots of hidden surprises, this one is for you.
