You will be hard pushed to have not heard of My sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. It has graced social media the world over and you would be hard pressed to find a book stack this hasn't appeared in!

This is exactly the reason I found myself pressing the 'buy' button on Amazon and waiting (im)patiently for the book to arrive. I'd seen so many good reviews, it's been hyped to the max, it was everywhere!

I get it. The cover art is brilliant and dramatic and the title pulls you right in with that dark humour.

It was a fast paced book that I read in one sitting, although I did find the flow a little jerky, rather than the smooth rhythm I am used to. The short chapters made for fast reading, however I felt they propelled from one scene to another without real continuity. Some chapters felt like they weren't entirely finished either. In all, perhaps a little under-developed?

It had a great plot and the ending surprised me somewhat but I found myself expecting and wanting a whole lot more. I was left with so many questions!

I enjoyed the acknowledgement of the bond sisterhood brings with it. The light coverage of child abuse was written sensitively. This novel also gives you a glimpse into life in Nigeria, how a family of three women survive and the pretences they have to put up with in a patriarchal society.

I have mixed feelings about this book. A great premise and a quick, dark humoured read. But something was missing.

Did I build this book up too much?
