I really enjoyed this one! I liked the subtle deadpan humour and the fact it was an relatively short, easy read, despite dealing with the deep topics which make up the plot. One of the main things this book educated me on is the pressure put upon the first born child in Nigerian families to look after younger siblings. I’ve read a great interview with Oyinkan Braithwaite (with Scott Simon) in which she says “...it's a huge - especially here in Nigeria, being the first born is a huge, huge role. It’s a huge responsibility.” The story is laced with snippets of domestic violence, as well as “inconvenient” murder, but the fact that Braithwaite doesn’t delve too deeply into these areas, I think gives the story even more depth. It makes the reader think and explore their own opinions further. Then again, that’s not to say I wouldn’t have loved more detail, perhaps a longer story discussing the two sister’s life further and delving into the grittier areas!
