Perfect for fans of fall-fast YA romance, coming of age novels and the best-friends-to-lovers trope, this raw and tender read is hard to put down. It has snappy, short chapters, a ton of familial complexity and a strong protagonist determined to follow her dreams.

I love the way the story is written, in short notes-to-self organised by time, almost like a diary. It's a great way of making the reader feel as if they're inside Nikki's head, understanding the fears and vulnerabilities she doesn't show others, and the true, secret feelings she hides behind her walls.

I also love the slow emotional development of the characters, from Nikki (who must break the cycle of conflict and emotional neglect in her family) and Vae (who must learn to express her feelings in less selfish and harmful ways), to their mother (who must learn to verbalise and demonstrate her love for her children before she loses them).

All the relationships feel authentic and realistically complicated and the author isn't afraid to shy away from hard truths and trauma. Her characters show that you can be beautiful and broken at the same time, and that real love perseveres despite mistakes.

If you're looking for a quick YA read with a strong message, I recommend My Week With Him.
