I found this book a delight to read. The main character is Nikki, a teenager who longs for the freedom from her mother to pursue her love of singing.
She has an audition in a weeks time but will have to travel to California. Before going she decides to go to a party where the boy, Malachai who she is so attracted to will be there and someone who she has always been able to talk to. Little does she know that he is with another girl.
Feeling totally let down Nikki decides to travel to California straight away. The car she drives has a broken fuel gauge and she has no idea how much fuel she has left. Needless to say she brakes down and Malachai recues her. With her friends and younger sister's involvement she spends a week with him while deciding her future.
The storyline between Nikki and her mother is powerful and well written and the author writes about black teenagers growing up in Texas. This is her debut book and one well worth a read.
