This is a great YA book written in a lively style with a mix of the story told by protagonist Nikki along with a mix of diary style entries and thoughts. Nikki has a challenging home life as she has a very difficult relationship with her mum, some of this came across but more back story might have helped. Nikki sounds to be a talented singer / songwriter and has been encouraged to audition for a girl band however she’s really disappointed that her best friend Malachi doesn’t seem to want to encourage her in this. After a big fall out with her mum she turns to Mal and he begs her to spend a week with him so he can show her what’s good in her life beyond her audition dreams.

I’m not the target audience for this but do read occasional YA and whilst this has some strong themes in it the style is very relaxed so it’s not challenging, the characters are good with a mix of good personalities and challenging ones and the story itself is not over complicated just a good one about relationships.
