My Week With Him is the story of Nikki, an eighteen year old girl who lives with her mother and half sister Vae in a trailer park in Texas. She has a difficult relationship with her mother and often runs away after a disagreement ending up staying with her best friend Mal. Nikki has big dreams to be a singer and has an audition planned in California, which she plans to attend seeing it as her opportunity to get away.
After another falling out, Nikki decides to leave town but is chased down by Mal who persuades her to join him on a road trip to decide her future. Whilst on the trip, Nikki discovers that her sister has disappeared and she and Mal head home to join the search.
Following a message Nikki ends up travelling to her grandmothers house with her mother and Mal where they track Vae down. This does not solve the problems between Nikki and her mother and when she is thrown out again and the locks at home are changed, Nikki decides to leave for good.
Mal has other plans and hopes to persuade Nikki to stay, attend prom with him and graduate. He has had his own problems from his childhood which is why he is such a great support to Nikki as she struggles with her relationship with her mother.
This is a nice easy read for young adults, looking at complicated relationships and how you sometimes have to make difficult decisions to follow your dreams.
