My Week With Him by Joya Goffney tells the story of Nikki (Shaniqua), a young adult in Texas, with dreams of a singing career in California. She has a difficult, loveless home relationship with her mum and sister Vae but is supported by her best friend Mal and his loving parents. The book charts a week with Mal and the decisions Nikki has to face regarding her family, friends and future. The book has complex and sensitive themes of young adult relationships, the challenges of career plans after eduction and self doubt/worth/esteem. Whilst I am not in the age bracket of the main characters of the book I was compelled to read it and in fact read it over a weekend. I enjoyed the dialect and language ( I had to look up what edges were!). I was interested in the character of Nikki’s mum who had a difficult upbringing herself and now struggles with bringing up 2 children with little money.
This book would be enjoyed by young adult readers.
