I wasn’t sure how I was going to get on with this book. Nikki the main character has such a challenging relationship with her mum, which is so well written and portrayed that at times it is really painful to read.
That relationship is also really cleverly contrasted with other relationships in her life; her friendships and her friends parental relationships. Coupled with the poverty Nikki lives in, again making her stand out within her peer group, some really challenging themes are addressed in the book.
Despite all of this, the constant push and pull of the narrative, in so many ways, keeps hooking you back into the story to know what happens next. Whether it’s a physical journey, a relationship or a personal goal, the way the author constantly moves toward and then away from better positions keeps you hooked. It’s an emotional journey tag times, but one I enjoyed being on right to the end.
