I'm not the target audience for this book but I really enjoyed it. It was modern without being confusing (for an adult!) and was obviously set in America but didn't feel alien to a brit reading it. The warning on the back that it 'contains themes some viewers may find upsetting' seems a bit overkill as I didn't find anything major which would be upsetting.
The characters were well rounded and the emotions were well written, you really felt it along with the characters. It shows teenage angst well, and a lot of kids I'm sure will resonate with the themes in the book of tricky relationships with parents etc.
Nikki didn't come across as annoying or thinking that she knew best, just that she was at a last resort when all she really wanted was to be loved by her mum. I liked reading about her blossoming friendship with Malachai, and who doesn't like a happy ending?!
