From the very first chapter, we have a strong understanding of Nikki and her emotional rollercoaster of a life. This novel is a snippet in the life of an eighteen year old girl, who comes from a background that has been strewn with financial hardships and a seemingly loveless mother. Nikki has always had to fend for herself, little love and encouragement from her mother and her younger sister reliance on her, puts a strain on her. Her sisters betrayal though triggers a decision in Nikki to abandon her life and move to California to pursue her music career. With her running away, the forces of the universe keep drawing her back home and back to her best friend mal. Mal confesses his love for Nikki and together they Embark on an emotional journey that ultimately helps build a relationship with Nikkis mother. A beautifully written character and social study on how society and poverty can diminish our opportunities to connect with one another. How pride can hinder us and how ultimately our strength will be determined by our actions and ability to embrace vulnerability. Mals adopted parents prove the point, their financial success allows them to be excessively supportive and their love is more freely given, because they are not hindered by the fear and desperation that can come from poverty. Nikkis mother is a complicated character, and certainly joya goffney has another great story there.
