I really like Joya's writing style, her charaters are complex, loveable and easy to empathise with.

Nikki has an audition that could see her dream of being a singer realised but should she come back to her small town after spring break. The novel explores complex mother/daughter relationships and trying to break cycles of abuse. Despite being a young adult novel this book deals with really complex issues of poverty, ambition anfd different types of family set ups.

Nikki has so much on her plate trying to care for her sister, do well at school and navigate her mothers anger and unrealistic expectations.

Mal issuch a loveable character he looks out for Nikki and shows her how she deserves love. A really romantic love story that has respect and friendship at its heart.

I would recommend this novel to late teens as it contains sexual references.
