Night by Night by Jack Jordan is a dark thriller following Rose, an insomniac mother who is struggling to come to terms with a tragedy which has broken her family apart.

While out one night unable to sleep, she bumps into a fleeing man who drops a journal at her feet. Upon reading the journal, she realises that the author, Finn Matthews, is terrified - someone is after him and he is in fear for his life. Thus begins Rose's quest to find the author of the journal in order to save him.

This is a well written and fast paced thriller in which Jack Jordan paints a horrifyingly realistic portrait of insomnia. Rose is a character who seems irrevocably broken, and her quest to find out what happened to Finn gives her the sort of purpose she has been missing for the last four years. She is a compelling and deeply flawed main character who you can't help but root for.

The author brilliantly builds the tension right up until the reveal, and I flew through the last one hundred and fifty pages. The mystery surrounding Finn Matthews disappearance is expertly layered with several twists and turns.

Unfortunately I didn't think the ending was as well done as the rest of the book. Although the reveal and the stalker's motivations came as a surprise, I was expecting something a little more from all the build up. The action at the end of the book strayed into slightly unbelievable territory and I struggled to suspend my disbelief. But overall, if you are looking for a well written, modern, dark thriller, then Night by Night may just be the right one for you.
