A modern thriller with some shocking moments. Initially, I found the narrator/protagonist quite pathetic. We later learn that she suffers from insomnia and it is having a marked impact on her family life. I felt the power of the impact through the way the children interact with her. As events unfold it becomes clear that she's a slave to her insomnia and I quickly started rooting for her to triumph over her awful husband. Finding the journal gives her a purpose and an opportunity to start living again though some of the contents of the journal are disturbing. There were some very graphic descriptions of abuse which I found quite upsetting. The novel addresses themes of family, corruption and homophobia. There were times in the book where I had to remind myself it's set in 2018/2019.
