Well this book had me gripped to each page! The first few chapters really grab your attention and investment in Rose, her actions, and her life. I found that throughout this story there were parts that broke my heart, chapters that left me speechless, and others that sent shivers down my spine!
We soon come to learn that Rose discovers a journal - Finn's journal. A journal to which we are given excerpts through the book to understand Finn's experiences, and how we can piece it in with Rose's current actions. It is interesting just how quickly we come to realise the Rose is main investigator of this case, not the assumed police officers whom would take the lead in other crime thrillers.
Rose is an interesting character as her past seems to be somewhat lurking in the background and as the reader I was left wondering how it would all come to the surface. Alongside this, her experience of chronic insomnia gives flavour to this thriller which really makes you think. The book is written so cleverly that you are sucked into the thrill of it all, but left with some breathing space to consider the wider picture.
There are some strong themes throughout including grief, homophobia, corruption, guilt and so so much more which makes me feel like every reader will find something that grabs them by the heartstrings and draws them in, particularly if related to personal experiences.
With the author being local to me, I did find some familiar locations referenced within the book (one being my place of work!) which had me consumed on every word and helped me to consider this story as real!
This book had everything I needed to keep me on my toes, some exciting events, graphic violent attacks, and even the odd raunchy romantic scene! But all this made Night By Night an absolute thrill to read!
After having read on of Jack Jordan's Instagram posts explaining the inspiration for this book, I was almost in tears! This story clearly goes much deeper than just your average thriller, and made me delve much deeper into the meaning behind this, and for that, I felt humbled.
Jack's writing is so captivating that I just can't wait to read more from him. I gave Night By Night a five star review on Goodreads and I'm really looking forward to his next title! After reading this I also attended a book event to meet Jack again and get my copy signed!
