I have loved every page of this psychological thriller written by the incredibly talented Jack Jordan. Upon finishing the first 30 pages aka the ‘Before’ section I was already hooked thanks to the powerful, descriptive and intense storytelling. It left my heart racing and I could really imagine myself in Rose’s position (the leading character) after the tragic accident that occurred meaning her life would never be the same again.

Fast forward four years to ‘After’, where the rest of the book is set and Rose is still dealing with the consequences of her family’s rejection and continues to suffer from the effects of Insomnia. One dark night when she is out alone with her thoughts, a man running through the streets bumps in to her leaving only one trace of their encounter; a journal left by her feet. Picking it up and returning to her home Rose opens it to find a chilling entry on the first page: “My name is Finn Matthews and if you’re reading this, I’m dead.”

Rose begins to dedicate every waking hour to discovering just what happened to Finn Matthews and why the Police seem to have no interest in investigating his disappearance. The purpose this journal gave Rose was captivating and from the outset I couldn’t wait to see what would happen and what truths Rose would uncover.

I really liked the interspersion of the entries from Finn’s journal and also the other male characters for whom there are chapters dedicated to, as Rose is embarking on her quest for answers. There is also an extremely clever parallel between a real life case that is mentioned part way through although the horror of what happened really saddened and surprised me! I also found it horrific to think that those in power can harbour such views and how this can result in devastating consequences.

I love how Jack has been able to make me feel so many emotions whilst reading Night By Night from shock to sadness, anger to relief. As I was speeding through the pages before reaching the epilogue, my heart was pounding and never in a million years did I see the truth that Rose uncovered coming! This is a truly gripping thriller and I can definitely see now where the tag line on the front of the book comes from – “You’d better stay awake if you want to stay alive”!
