Wow, just wow!
When I wrote my First Impression, I was instantly hooked by this novel and was amazed to discover the author was a young male.
As I read the rest of this unsettling story, I felt he got inside Rose’s head- the agony of what she has done and the debilitating lack of grip on reality due to the frightening insomnia felt so real that I could empathise with her.
Jack writes well and understands women- I have read that he likes women & has lots of female friends and this comes through in his writing. Maybe the cause Rose involves herself with is not the most logical, but who knows how we would react in a similar situation?
To lose a child is terrible, to be the cause of a child’s death is unbearable. In searching for the missing Flynn, she seems to be trying to return children to their parents. Although the meeting where Rose talks to other parents seems to pass responsibility to her very rapidly.
The story moves swiftly in pace, supporting characters are clearly drawn. I believed in Montgomery as Rose does, and questioned the motives of several others she comes across.
Jack makes a strong point about police corruption, it strikes me that is based on personal knowledge- it raises the question, if you can’t get help from them who do you turn to?
Towards the end of the book I felt there were a few too many coincidences enabling loose ends to be tied up, it certainly isn’t a neat happy ending. Maybe, after all, this is the best that can be hoped for.
