The first Dinah Jefferies book I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not my normal genre, it had elements of danger, intrigue and tension that kept me turning the pages and the touches of romance were light. The historical details of Morocco in the ‘60s added to my knowledge and the setting without swamping me. The biggest pull of the book was the sheer beauty of the descriptions that added so much to the atmosphere of the book. Great sensory details that made me feel as if I was there - certainly helped by the recent oppressive heat I read it in.
Although this is the third part of the ‘Daughters of war’ series, I didn’t feel I had missed out by not having read the previous books. I felt the three sisters from those books appeared in this story mainly in supporting roles, providing little details as necessary and relevant.
This story is about Clemence and her granddaughter Vicky, who meet for the first time in Marrakech, both looking for answers. Clemence has her own skeletons in the cupboard and is forced to confront them when faces from the past appear. Vicky, on her first adventure away from home, ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time, thrusting her into a dangerous situation that brings the two women closer together.
Glib coincidences aside, this is evocatively written with strong female characters. A very entertaining read.
