Night Train to Marrakech is set in 1966 and flips between the perspectives of Vicky Baudin and Clemence Petier, with the former having travelled via train from France to Morocco to meet the latter (her recently discovered grandmother) for the first time. However, by the time Vicky arrives in Marrakech, Clemence has been greeted by an unwelcome visitor from her past and becomes reluctant to see her granddaughter stay in the country longer than necessary, setting up a story of estranged families, secrets and murder.

You can tell that the author enjoys transporting readers to another time and place through the detailed description of setting (which has turned out to be quite poignant given the recent Moroccan earthquake), while the use of French idioms and expressions as well as train sounds does a lot to add authenticity to the central characters and Vicky's journey.
