I’ve not read any Dinah Jefferies books before, indeed this isn’t my usual genre but I like to read something different from time to time. This is the third book in a trilogy however I had no issue reading it as a standalone story, it did reference odd items from the past but nothing that had impact on this really. This has some strong female characters in Clemence and Vicky and the awkward dynamics of a granddaughter meeting the grandmother she never knew existed made a good base for the story. The political turbulence in Morocco added some serious tension to this which gathered pace as the story progressed and Clemence’s own background made harrowing reading especially when she forced herself to face her own demons. This is a very atmospheric read with a complex setting which only adds to the story and the mysteries of both past and present are both utterly absorbing.
